Lessons in Arvyndase: The Language of the Silver Elves

The following are Chapters One, Chapters Two, and Chapters Three, which includes 30 lessons in each, of our book titled Arvyndase (Silverspeech): A Short Course in the Magical Language of the Silver Elves. Arvyndase (Silverspeech): The Language of the Silver Elves

Chapter 1

1. Tae (the)

This is intended as a short course in the elfin language Arvyndase (literally SilverSpeech, pronounced Air – vin – dah – see, the language of the Silver Elves). It will use word substitutions to teach one to read the language.

The first word we will explore is the article Tae, which is the Arvyndase word for "the". From now forward, tae will be substituted for the word “the” for tae rest of this course. Tae is pronounced tay, rhymes with say.

Arvyndase is a very vowel oriented language. Vowels are almost always pronounced independently of each other. An exception to this is tae “ae” at tae end of a word. Arvyndase has three forms of tae vowel “a”. Written as an “a”, it is a long a, that is it sounds like the name of tae vowel when spoken, as in tae word, say, play, bay, etc. An “a” with a dot over it, sounds like tae “a” in ah, dah, bah, etc. An “a” with two dots, side by side over it, is pronounced like tae “a” in at, bat, fat, etc. However, an “a” at tae end of a word without a dot is always pronounced as tae singled dotted a, that is as in ah, pa, ma, and so forth.

On tae other hand, an “a” followed by an “e” at tae end of a word is pronounced as a long, or undotted “a”. If an ae is found anywhere else in tae word, the vowels are pronounced separately.

It should be noted as well that an “a” after tae letter “c”, even without a dot over the letter “a”, is always pronounced as a single dotted “a”, thus it sounds like cah, while an “a” after a “k” is nearly always a long “a”, thus kay, unless otherwise noted.

2. Na (a and an)

Tae English language has two definite articles “a” and “an” that are represented in Arvyndase by “na” (pronounced nah). In English, “a” is used before a word that begins with a consonant and “an” is used before words that begin with a vowel. There are a few minor exceptions to this rule, tae rule really being that “a” is used before words that have the sound of consonants and “an” is used before words that sound like vowels. These exceptions occur so seldom that they usually go unconsidered. From now forth, we will use tae Arvyndase word na in place of “a” and “an”.

Zardoa Silverstar Love of tae Silver Elves created Arvyndase over na ten-year period in tae 1990’s. He created tae language both for tae fun of it, and also because, while he very much liked Tolkien’s elfin languages of Sindarin and Quendi, they didn’t contain enough words to satisfy his need for using them in his magic. Currently, Arvyndase contains over 31,000 word entries, although that often includes word suffixes and prefixes. Therefore tae Arvyndase dictionary will contain tae words for create, creation, and created, etc. He did this by going through na 800 page paperback dictionary of English and creating Arvyn words on three by five cards that he kept in cross referenced metal file boxes: Arvyndase to English and English to Arvyndase. Eventually, when he had completed tae bulk of tae language, he entered it into na Excel spread sheet that can very quickly go from Arvyndase to English or English to Arvyn.

3. Nar (and)

Tae conjunction “and” is used in tae English language to connect nouns, verbs and parts of sentences. Tae Arvyndase word for “and” is “nar” (pronounced nair, rhymes with fair) and will be used henceforth in this course. Like in English, “nar” can be used to connect nouns, such as: na elf, na dwarf, nar na pixie. Or verbs, as in: she both ran nar walked to the store. Or clauses, such as: tae elf went to tae store, nar to tae post office.

As we explained previously, Zardoa created Arvyndase just for tae fun of it, tae challenge of such na extensive project, nar to have na magical language that we could use with our spell work. Although, he created it primarily in tae1990’s, he had first attempted to create na elfin language in tae mid-1970’s, however, tae sheer immensity of creating that many words overwhelmed him nar his elf sister nar assistant on tae language at that time, Morning Moonstar, that they abandoned tae project before they got halfway through the “a’s”. It wasn’t until tae 1990’s that he felt ready to take on tae project again, nar this time committed hims’elf to completing it, this time with assistance nar encouragement from his soul/spirit mate, Silver Flame.

4. Sa (or)

Or is used in English as na function word, or conjunction that offers na alternative between nouns, verbs, or parts of speech: do you want ham or chicken, would you like to walk or take tae car, etc. Sa (pronounced sah) is tae Arvyndase word for “or” nar will be substituted henceforth in this course.

When we say that Zardoa created Arvyndase, we are equally satisfied nar open to tae idea that he remembered, nar/sa channeled it. So much of tae elfin culture has been lost sa erased through tae course of time nar tae influx of dominant sa more dominating cultures that most of our culture comes from fiction nar Fairy Tales, many of which are pure nonsense. So we have only our own feelings, sa our own instincts, nar perhaps what Jung would call our Collective Elfin Unconscious to guide us about what is true sa false, although this might also be what is true for some of us, but false for others. Thus tae more one awakens to their elfin nature, tae more one must rely upon their inner sense of what is true for them, as na individual, nar true for elves overall.

5. Kana (but)

Tae Arvyndase word for “but” is kana (pronounced kay – nah).

Because most of modern Elfae (elf and faerie kind) were not raised among those who knew themselves to be elves, we must use, as explained previously, our instincts nar feelings to decipher what it means to be na elf; kana that should not be taken as na sign that we elves are na illogical people. In fact, in most cases, we are probably tae most reasonable nar logical folk on tae planet. We are na deeply feeling people, nar na extremely logical folk, kana we do tend to be far less emotional than most people. We elves make na distinction between feelings nar emotion, unlike tae majority of people who seem to think they are tae same thing. Feeling being na deep inner sense of being, emotion to us is, on the contrary, feeling aroused nar/sa affected by thoughts nar ideas.

Thus, while we use our feelings to guide us to what is true about being elfin, we also use our logical abilities to “separate tae wheat from tae chaff”. This is particularly important since most of us have been raised in normal society, nar by individuals who were normal, sa endeavoring very hard to appear so.

6. Practice: tae (the), na (a and an), nar (and), sa (or), kana (but).
Silver Flame suggested that we give tae reader na chance to practice tae words given so far about every fifth lessons sa so in the beginning, therefore here are na few elf sayings with which to practice.

It is said that one nar one equals two, kana tae elves say one nar one can equal three, sa four, sa even more depending on how fertile tae first ones are.
If we could we, elves would run naked through tae streets (nar na few pixies do), kana we love to dress up too much to do so.

When people ask us to make either-sa decisions, we elves often asked, “Kana why can’t we have both?”

Tae Way to Elfin is easy to find for those with na kind heart nar na open mind. These need look no farther than their mirror, kana those with closed minds will not find Elfin, nar those with unkind hearts will wish they hadn’t.

Tae elves are of tae opinion that in kana na few cases, tae path one chooses is tae right choice for them at tae time, nar tae place one winds up is kana na way station on na never ending journey. For life is na peregrination of learning nar awakening, nar tae goal is not to end up some place, kana to never cease exploring on tae Road of Becoming.

7. Da (is/are), Dain (was/were)

Tae Arvyndase word for “ is” is “da” (pronounced dah). It da also tae word for “are”. So we would say both he da going to tae store, nar they da going to tae store. The past tense of “da” da formed by adding “-in”, which da tae Arvyndase equivalent of tae English “-ed”. This da pronounced dah – in, nar tae “ i” in “-in” da pronounced as though it had two dots over it, although that da assumed nar not written as tae “a” at tae end of Arvyndase words act as though they have na dot over them, although none da shown.

So “dain” (was nar were) da like saying “is-ed” (was) sa “are-d” (were) in English, which makes no sense in that language, kana makes perfect sense in Arvyndase. In English, however, you have words like depart nar departed, sa turn nar turned, sort nar sorted. This “ in” da also used as tae “ed” in words like wood nar wooded, beard nar bearded, near nar neared, nar can be added to nearly any Arvyndase word to create past tense.

We know, this da na complicated lesson, nar some may wish to reread it several times, however, it really demonstrates that in many ways, Arvyndase da na simpler language to learn nar use.

8. Ter (it) Ter’na (its)

Tae Arvyndase word for “ it” da ter (pronounced tier or tear, as in cry). Ter da na third person singular pronoun. Ter should be noted that some languages, for instance Japanese, do not have na word for “ it”. Arvyndase, being channeled, sa created, sa remembered by na English speaker resembles English in syntax (tae arrangement of words in tae sentence), parts of speech, etc., kana ter could also be translated into other languages sa used by non-English speakers, in which case ter would take on tae syntax nar sentence formation of that language. So too, in English one says, tae red house, nar in other languages one say tae house red, na Arvyndase speaker would arrange tae language in tae form for different elves according to their native tongue.

One might think that this would create problems for Arvyndase speakers from different language backgrounds, kana such na challenge should be easy for elves to overcome since we da like two people who da madly in love kana don’t speak tae same language. We find ways to make ours’elves understood. Its (ter’na sa ter-na (pronounced tier - nah)) simply na matter of our intense desire to unite.

You will note that tae suffix ‘” ’na” sa “–na” added to any word in Arvyndase creates what in English would be tae possessive “ ’s”, as in John’s house, Linda’s shoe sa love’s sweet tears, etc. Tae English “it’s” (it is) would be “ter da” in Arvyndase nar has no contraction.

9. Ver (in)

Tae English preposition “in” will be replaced by tae Arvyndase word “ver” (pronounced veer) henceforth. Kana, ter should be noted that ter da not tae same word used ver Arvyndase as a prefix when one says, for instance, something da “inexpressible” sa “inadequate”. We will get to that form of “in” ver tae future.

Ver tae course of time, with na basic grasp of tae articles, prepositions, nar other common parts of speech, as well as na grasp of tae prefixes nar suffixes, nar na basic Arvyndase dictionary, you will be na very proficient writer, reader, nar speaker of this language.

People often ask us, on hearing that we’ve created, nar/sa remembered, nar/sa channeled this elfin language, if we speak ter ours’elves, nar alas, we do not. Kana, as we proceed ver creating this course we, too, da becoming more nar more adept ver its usage.

10. Va (to)

Tae preposition “to” in Arvyndase da expressed by tae word “va” (pronounced vah), which will replace “to” henceforth ver this course. Ter da said that one’s language deeply affects tae way one views tae world nar tae Universe. So ter da that as one learns nar uses Arvyndase, one moves ever deeper into Elfin. This occurs due va tae fact that Elfin springs forth not so much from na outer dimension, as from na inner one. Tae more one surrounds thems’elves with Elfin/Faerie, nar lives their life as, na elf, tae more elfin they become nar tae more Elfin, tae dimensional vibration that da Faerie, surrounds them, radiates from them, nar leads them ever deeper va their true nature, which da elfin.

Some might think Elfin exists without elf sa faery kind, kana when have you ever read na story where tae characters went va na wild place nar thought ter da Faerie without elves sa faeries appearing? Elfin/Faerie stems from tae being of elfin/faerie folk. Ter da not Faerie that creates elves, kana elves that create Faerie. Still, there da no question that Faerie exists ver potential, awaiting tae elves and fair folk va bring ter va life.

11. an (from), ter’na (its)

Tae Arvyndase word for “from” da “an” (pronounced ain, as in train, pain, main, etc. rhymes with sane, Dane, mane, crane, nar so forth). We realize that this can be na bit confusing since “an” da spelled tae same as tae English article “an”, kana ter’na use ver tae sentence will help distinguish ter an ter’na English Homograph.

Once again, we know we da giving you na lot va deal with ver this lesson, nar ter might take several readings for some students, such as these elves, va grasp. We suggest that, if you have not already, you create na file, sa na notepad, containing tae words we’ve covered thus far for easy reference as you proceed.

Some might ask if these elves really expect this created language va be used by elves ver tae future, nar tae answer da, yes we do. Not necessarily as na language of communication among people so much as na language of magic. An ancient times ter has been held that language used ver magical ceremonies da more effective if ter da na expression of feeling more than ideas, what tae Elf Queen’s Daughters referred va as “thought emotes”. Ter should also be pointed out that tae earliest language, an tae most ancient of times da often called Sensor va describe ter’na emotive nature. Magical languages spoken ver ritual don’t have va make sense as ideas so much as be na true expression of tae feeling of tae magician connected va nar empowering tae images sHe projects with hir magic.

12. U (of)

Tae word “u” (pronounced you) ver Arvyndase stands for tae English “of”.

We should probably note at this point that Arvyndase da na very melodious language nar has few harsh sounds ver ter. If, when pronouncing tae words, they sound rough va you, then endeavor va draw out tae words as you say them. U course, ter would be best if you could hear us pronouncing tae words, nar we hope at some time va create na video with that purpose ver mind.

Ter should be remembered that tae elves da na people u harmony, nar u poetry. We da tae people u tae gentle breeze nar tae whispered words u love. Kana, ter da also true that we can be the people u tae fierce winds shaking tae trees nar warning one u powerful magics ver tae making.

13. Practice 2

One u tae things we find helpful da va read ver English (sa whatever language you use) nar translate into Arvyndase as we read along. We also find ter helpful sometimes va read these lessons nar translate tae Arvyndase parts into English as we read along. Whatever works for you da best.

As elves use Arvyndase, we expect they will adapt ter va their own needs, adding words that might be absent an tae dictionary, nar adjusting tae language ver tae way that works best for them. This da va be expect. Na language that does not change da not na living language.
We da giving birth va this language, kana ter da others who will carry on ter’na life. If large numbers u elves took up tae language, ter would develop dialects, nar ver time separate into several languages. That da va be expected. There da no right way sa wrong way va use this language. No experts va say what da right sa wrong. However, if you wish va communicate with others, you will have va agree on certain accepted usages among you for clarity. So ter da, so ter shall be. Our love nar blessings da ever with you.

14. Te (be) Tedas (being – verb nar noun)

Tae Arvyndase word for tae English verb “be” da “te” (pronounced tea).

Learning va use this language da as easy as ter da va te na elf. One simply has va persist ver tedas (pronounced tea – dace (rhymes with mace)) nar acting as na elf, every day ver every way va te na elf, nar one simply has va persist ver following this course va speak nar write Arvyndase. (Note: tae suffix “das” added va nearly any noun or verb ver Arvyndase functions like tae English “ing”.)

U course, not everyone wishes va te na elf, anymore than everyone wishes va learn this language. Kana, for those who do tae way da open nar easy nar there da nearly always elves nar others va help you on tae way, either on tae physical plane sa tae planes where tae spirits abide, which da also tae physical plane kana ver na much more subtle form.

While we can understand that those who da not elves do not wish va te elves. Tedas elves for us da tae most wondrous thing. We love tedas elves. Ter gives us great joy nar pleasure, nar da tae source u our delight nar our magic. Ver some ways we wonder how anyone could not wish va te na elf, nar yet, ver our minds if na person da who nar what they da truly meant va te, than while they may not te elves, they da elfin enough for us. For tedas one’s own s’elf, ver tae elfin mind, da va te na elf, after na fashion, va us.

15. Vek (can – verb) Tein (been)

Tae English auxiliary verb “can” da translated into Arvyndase as “vek” (pronounced veek, rhymes with seek). (Note: tae noun for “can” as ver tin can, da na different word.)
Da we having fun yet? This dain tae first thing our daughter, Elantari, ever read on her own.

We had tein (pronounced tea – in) (note tae addition u tae suffix “in” va tae verb te (be) va create “been”, although tae literal translation would te “be-ed) home-schooling her, nar on na trip va Berkeley, Ca. she looked up at na billboard nar read out “Da we having fun yet?”
So our question va you da, Da you having fun yet? If not, relax. Tae key va learning Arvyndase da not so much intense effort, kana relaxed practice. Enjoy your studies, nar keep reading tae lessons, nar ter will get easier nar easier. Vek this te so? U course, ter vek.
Time nar consistent practice da tae key va learning all things. That nar enjoyment. Remember tae ancient elven saying, “If you da not having fun, you da not learning anything”. Ter da only though joy that we truly learn. Pain (not va te confused with effort) makes us avoid things. Joy unites us with our learning nar da probably tae greatest lesson teachers vek learn. Vek this te true? We assure you ter da. Ter has tein demonstrated over nar over again. So relax nar enjoy tae ride, this vek te great fun.

16. Yon (will – verb nar noun)

Tae Arvyndase word for tae English word “will”, both as na noun nar na auxiliary verb, da “yon” (pronounced yone, rhymes with lone). (Note: while you could use yon for tae noun “will”, as ver last yon nar testament, there da na separate Arvyndase noun “desutra” (pronounced dee- sue – trah) for that particular concept, kana we yon not expect you va remember that word.)

Yon da na very important part u magic. Whether ter da used consciously sa unconsciously, as ter da sometimes, perhaps oft-times da, yon helps direct nar empower tae magic. This yon te clear va all true magicians, particularly elfin magicians. Tae idea u magic, ver’na purpose, da va bring about our yon. Nar for elves that yon da directed nar empowered by our vision. Tae elfin vision da ever inclusive u na world where all may live nar love together ver harmony, where each finds fulfillment, nar every individual yon te respected nar taken care u, by all their others. Does this sound idealistic? We elves da na idealistic people. Kana while this ideal may seem fanciful va some, ter da not na impossible dream, nar ter should te remembered that we elves nar faery folk da noted for our ability, our quite magical ability, va make dreams nar wishes come true. We wish va live ver na perfect world, which for us da na elfin world, nar we yon bring ter about through our yon, our actions, our intent … our very lives. Elfin da not just na dream kana na world we yon create for all our kind nar all who yon va te among us.

17. Tat (as)

Tae English word “as” da translated into tae Arvyndase language as “tat” (pronounced tate, rhymes with fate). Tat you must realize by now, we yon substitute “tat” for “as” tat we proceed ver these lessons.

This da not tae only form u na Elfin language ver existence. There da Tolkien’s Sindarin nar Quendi, nar you yon find numerous sites on tae internet that have lists u Elven words. There da no problem, tat far tat these elves da concerned with interposing words an these other elfin languages with this one. U course, one would need va do this with others who share one’s knowledge u those words sa language. Nar, there would te no difficulty, again tat far tat these elves da concerned, with mixing several languages together, again with tae practical proviso that all tae communicators share access va all tae dictionaries involved. Just tat English incorporates words an (from) Middle English nar ter’na ancestors, French through tae Norman invaders, Latin an tae Romans, Greek, primarily an tae scientific community, nar these days, also words an Japanese (such tat sushi), nar other languages.

This could cause some confusion if there da words that da spelled tae same from different languages, kana that da also tae case ver English, nar we expect that some form u notation yon te created that yon signify words an different languages. Although, most often such conflicts da overcome by tae position (thus meaning) u tae word ver tae sentence.

18. La (by) Nolorda (by the way)

Tae Arvyndase word for tae English word “by” da “la” (pronounced lah).

Tat we dain saying ver tae previous lesson, this language da meant va te adapted la ter’na users. U course, tat we pointed out, ter da important for those who use ter together va agree on any changes, additions, sa modifications they make. This da not necessarily tae case for ceremonial magicians who may, here nar there, find ter necessary va add na word sa two, tat required for their workings. Still, this da na language with thousands u words, nar we expect few additions va te needed ver most cases. Ver other words, if you don’t find tae word you need ver our dictionary, make one up, channel ter, sa remember ter, tat we did.

La tae way, there da actually na Arvyndase word that means “by the way” , ter da “nolorda” (pronounced no – lore – dah), kana ter da perfectly acceptable va use tae individual Arvyndase words tat we did at tae beginning u this paragraph. Tat you vek see, we da na easy people va please. Easy-going nar, ver many ways, just plain easy.

19. ton (on) gos (on)

There da two Arvyndase words for tae English word “on”. Tae first da “ton” (pronounced tone) that da used ver tae sense u “let’s get ton tae train” nar bears tae idea of tedas “on” top u something. Tae other Arvyndase word for “on” da “gos” (pronounced go-ss, sound like ghost sa toast without tae “t”) nar ter da used va designate “on” ver tae sense of movement sa going forward, such tat “Let’s get gos down tae road” “let’s get gos that project nar get ter done”. We realize this da na bit confusing nar if you should use one word ver tae place u tae other, ter da no big deal.

Nolorda, we realize ter vek te difficult va decide which “on” va use, gos sa ton. Kana, generally speaking, if something da not physically sa metaphorically ton something, gos da tae appropriate word. Tat ver, “’Let’s get gos with ter”. Any sentence that signifies, movement, sa usage, yon te “gos”. Ton tae other hand, “ton” da appropriate ver, “Put ter ton tae table”. Kana da ter, “Call me gos tae phone” sa “Call me ton tae phone”? Either works for us. Here da some more examples: “An [from] now gos”, “Come ton Tuesday”, “They just talk gos nar gos”, “What da they going gos about?”, nar so gos. Use your best judgment nar we da sure you yon get gos fine with this lesson. Next time, gos va other words.

20. rep (up) repton (upon)

Tae Arvyndase word for “up” da “rep” (pronounced reap”. Note that tae word for “upon”, tat ter da ver English da composed la combining “rep” (up) nar “ton” (on) thus, repton (upon, pronounced reap-tone).

Once repton na time, tat nearly every faery tale begins, there dain these two elves who tried va use Tolkien’s elf languages nar thought, wouldn’t ter te nice if he had some articles nar preposition, etc. va make tae use u tae language more accessible, tat well tat, na lot more nouns nar verbs. Tat stated earlier ver these lessons, they did not continue with their efforts, kana Zardoa did eventually do so.

Ver tae 1990’s Zardoa also began giving out elf names through tae internet, nar these names each have na meaning, so ver addition va tae words ver tae Arvyndase dictionary, there da, tat this point, rep va nearly 5,500 names, which vek each te used tat na Arvyndase word.
These words would te used ver tae same way tat one would say, “That guy da na Benedict Arnold” sa, “He da na regular Rembrandt”, etc.

21. Practice 3

They say… dear kindred… that tae way va Elfin/Faerie da within. This da true, kana ter da also true that la using Arvyndase sa other elfin languages sa using na elfin name, one begins va manifest Elfin here ton Earth, va bring ter va life la living tat na elf. An [from] tae first time one uses Elfin, ver whatever form, one awakens tae attention u tae spirits u Faerie nar they da drawn va one tat elves da va music nar dance. Tat we move gos with these lessons nar one uses tae language more nar more, tae fair folk yon notice nar ever more magic yon awaken around one.

Rep till now, we have not spoken much u tae philosophy u we elves, kana tat we go gos, we yon speak ever more u these things. Tat one begins va absorb these ideas nar ideals nar these thought-emotes one yon find, tat though la magic, which u course ter da, that coincidences nar synchronicities yon increase ver one’s life. Nar this much da guaranteed, if one calls out va Elfin, Elfin yon respond. Ter vek te na bit disconcerting at first, for many da immediately caught between tae parameters u tae world they knew nar tae ever expanding nar evolving borders u Faerie. There da one thing one vek count repton: we yon, ver tat much tat ter da ver our power, always te here va help you, tat, ver fact, we have ever tein.

22. mol (word) molli (words) oso (the final word or directive)

How about na few nouns? Tae word ver tae Arvyndase language for “word” da “mol” (pronounced mole). There da also na mol that means tae “last mol” sa tae “final mol” ton na subject, nar that mol da “oso” (pronounced oh – so). This would te tae mol used ver popular slang when one says “word” meaning, “that da tae truth” sa “truth”, thus elfin “gangstas”, if there dain any would say, “Oso”. This would also te tae case if someone asked, “Did you hear about Evandra? Tae oso da she’s fallen ver kyela (love)”.

Va make mol pural, thus “words”, one would add tae suffix “li” (pronounced lie). This suffix da tae Arvyndase form u tae English pural suffixes u “-s’, “-es”, “-ies” nar vek te added va any noun ver Arvyndase va create na pural form u that mol. Ter vek also te added va verbs va create tae pural form. Kana, ter should te noted that this da not tae case where “-s” da added ver English va na verb va signify ter’na use ver relationship va na singular pronouns. This form ver Arvyndase da signified la tae suffix “-lu” (pronounced loo, rhymes with who).

Tat na example let’s take tae Arvyndase mol “kyela” (pronounced key – L – lah), one u several molli ver Arvyndase for tae English mol “love”.
