The Wood Nymphs were born of the third race. Having progressed through the mineral kingdom to the vegetable kingdom where they had become tree like beings on the order of ents, that is mobile trees... they then in the third age began to humanized by taking the form of people like creatures. The early efforts of these beings to anthrometamorhize thems'elves can be seen beautifullly in the work of Brian Froud.

The Wood Nymphs, for the most part, fell in love with the tree worshippers of their time and intermingled freely. There were no prohibitions in that age on sexual conduct and their's was abundant. They have unfortunately, like many Faerie creatures suffered much with the coming of man and other sexually repressed cultures. They have been branded as whores, sluts, etc. and even treated as mentally insane for their willingness to share their bodies in such an open fashion. The word nymphomaniac was coined for and from them. Fortunately, at least for a while, the nymphs are experiencing a come back and we elves, their kin, are overjoyed that this is so.
